High avalanche danger today for mountain areas in Montana including Cooke City
BILLINGS, Mont. -
A backcountry avalanche warning today from the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center for the Southern Madison and Southern Gallatin Ranges, the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone and the mountains around Cooke City. The avalanche danger is rated high on all slopes.
The GNFAC reports over one foot of dense snow has fallen onto a weak and unstable snowpack and there are strong winds reported.
Also tonight in Billings there will be a free avalanche awareness class. The class will be in the main auditorium of the science building at MSU Billings from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
