Ways to help those in need this Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and our area shelters and food banks could still use some help preparing for the holiday.

The Montana Rescue Mission (MRM) said they are still in need of two things: pumpkin pie and cranberries. They say the earlier the better, just as long as they have the items by Wednesday.

"We still have spots available, we are needing assistance as far as volunteers to come in Monday through Wednesday to help with prep. It touches my heart the overwhelming support we receive from this community so we are already signing people up for volunteering to provide Christmas," said Denise Smith, the spokesperson for MRM.

Seating for the MRM Thanksgiving dinner is at 1 p.m. Thursday and the mission also prepares a meal delivery for those who are unable to make it. The deadline to sign up to deliver dinners is Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The dinner they will be serving is prepared by the Chefs and Cooks Association, who are already hard at work putting the meal together. They also prepare the meal for the Billings Food Bank community Thanksgiving. Between the two dinners, over 90 turkeys will be served.

The food bank had a long line on Monday of those picking up their own Thanksgiving dinner boxes. They will be handing out those boxes on Tuesday and Wednesday as well and expect to hand out over 2,000 over the course of this week.

"Once this holiday is over we go right into Christmas, which is usually a much busier and heavier holiday. Certainly we are continuing to ask for turkeys and all of the trimmings. We couldn't do what we do if it wasn't for everybody getting on board and helping us so we really appreciate it," said Sheryle Shandy, the executive director of the Billings Food Bank.

Businesses, schools and individuals have been helping out at the food bank, they expect to have around 200 volunteers both Tuesday and Wednesday.
