Report: MT Successful at Placing Children in Family Setting

Children in Montana's child welfare systems get placed with families at a higher rate than in most other states. A new Kids Count policy report finds 90% of children in the state's child welfare systems are going to bed with the care and comfort of a family.

57,000 children under the care of child welfare systems across the nation go to bed without the care and comfort of a family.

The report found that Montana's child protection agency is one of the best in the nation in getting these children placed in a home, ranking a few points below the highest ranking of 94%. Based on 2013 statistics the national average is 84%.

Research shows in many states children are inappropriately placed in group homes, sometimes making it hard for these children to form attachments.

"This can lead to lifelong problems. Many children inappropriately placed in group settings may struggle with education, the criminal justice system and even raising healthy families of their own,” said Jennifer Calder with Montana Kids Count.

Research recommends first and foremost children are placed in homes with relatives or family. If this isn't an option it recommends they're placed in foster homes. Finally, it recommends group homes for those in need of a group type of setting.

The Annie E. Foundation funds the nation's Kids Count data centers in order to improve the lives of disadvantaged children across the U.S.

    The Bacon Rind Fire continues to burn over a thousand acres of Yellowstone National Park and the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, as fire crews attempt to slow the wildfire.  National Forest Service officials said in a press release that the fire experienced minimal growth yesterday.
