Sex Offender Watch

Posted: Updated:
CODY, Wyo. - How would you like to be notified if a sex offender lives near you? The Park County, Wyoming Sheriff's Office has a new sex offender notification service that does that and more.

It's hard to know who may be watching your children, or your home. But, the Park County Sheriff's office is participating in a nationwide program called, “OffenderWatch” that helps people find registered sex offenders who live near them, or anyone else they want to protect.

The Sheriff's office has had a sex offender website before. But, this one is different.”

Park County Spokesman Lance Mathess explained, “This is real time. As soon as the offender changes addresses, the information is immediately available to the public through the website.”

The website is parkcountysheriff.net. Once there, Mathess says a click on the Sex Offender Registry allows you to put in your zip code, and find a map that shows offender addresses as close as a quarter mile to your home.

But, what if you don't remember to check the web periodically for sex offenders?

Mathess explained, “The OffenderWatch program allows you as a citizen to register your address with the program itself.”

So, if a registered offender moves into your area, you don't have to find that person.

Mathess said, “You will receive and immediate email as to their location and notifying you that an offender has moved in to your neighborhood.”

You can also find out if an offender has moved close a loved one.

Mathess explained, “Say a mother or a child or someone like that that you'd like to be notified as well. You can register their address as well. You can register as many addresses as you want.”

When asked if the system might endanger the offender, Mathess replied,

“We would urge the public to use restraint.”

If you click on "Sex Offender Registry" while on the Park County Sheriff's web page, it will take you to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.
