BILLINGS -

MSU Billings Annual Faculty Exhibition opened last Thursday at the Northcutt Steele Gallery on campus.

The exhibition features Jodi Lightner's large-scale installation entitled, ”Gathered Coherence”.

We sat down with the Assistant Professor of Art, who is fairly new to the Billings area.

"I came to Billings to teach at MSUB. I was looking for a position that taught painting and drawing, primarily, and this satisfied that need and that desire, and I interviewed and felt right at home with the department,” said Lightner.

Lightner's artistic area of expertise is, what she calls, “flat art” -- painting and drawing.

But this exhibition deals with actual physical space.

Installation artwork typically involves three-dimensional objects that are site-specific and transform the perception of a particular space.

“A lot of my work has become larger scale installations, taking up larger spaces in the gallery, and I would like to continue putting on larger scale exhibitions, finding venues that work with the space.”

“The show, in a nut-shell, is about the idea of these gatherings that happen within our social circles, and in thinking about that gathering, I decided to make use of my community here in Billings,” added Lightner.

A reception will be at MSU Billings Northcutt Steele Gallery, this Thursday, September 4th, from 5pm to 7pm.

Lightner will be giving an Artist Talk explaining some of the ideas, letting viewers in on some of the thoughts behind the show.

There will be food, drinks and a “gathering of people”.

Her installation exhibition will be on display through September 25th.
