FIRST ON KHQ: Mother says she was possessed by the devil after throwing baby off cliff

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash - A Spokane mother claims inner demons made her throw her 14-month-old child off a 50 foot cliff. 25-year-old Destiny Ahenakew appeared in a Spokane County courtroom Monday afternoon. She faces a charge of first degree assault of a child. Prosecutors are trying to determine if they will make those charges more severe and charge her with attempted murder. On Saturday Ahenakew was arrested and accused of throwing her 14 month son over a railing and down a 50 foot cliff. A witness to the incident, Ron Munden told KHQ's Dylan Wohlenhaus " seeing it was heart wrenching, it's tough to comprehend. But to see it, I mean it brought it to life."

Munden was painting at a home near West Mission and Cochran in Spokane when he says a 25-year-old mother who police say is Destiny Ahenakew came by and asked for water with her child. Munden says Ahenakew walked to the back of the house on to the deck and began to read scripture from the bible. Munden says Ahenakew kissed the boy in her hands then threw him over the 50 foot cliff off the deck. Munden says he heard the mother say "the devil made me do it."

In court Monday, family members of Ahenakew sat in on her first appearance. KHQ spoke with Della Ahenakew the grandmother of Destiny. She says "I broke down myself. I broke down because when I heard the news it was a very serious charge." When also asked what she wanted people to know about her granddaughter and the horrific crime she is accused of she said "I want them to know she was not the same person who did that. She had to have been crazy you know?"

Destiny is in the Spokane county jail under $70,000 dollars bond. She was scheduled for an October trial for an unrelated car theft charge when she was arrested Saturday. Her 14 month old son is doing well family members say and it in the custody of family.
