Beaverhead County Investigating Possible Homicide Near Wise River

Posted: Updated:
BEAVERHEAD COUNTY -

Beaverhead County Sheriff's Department and state investigators search for answers after campers find a body at the Bryant Creek campground near the town of Wise River. The sheriff's office has not released too many details just yet.

Cut up watermelon is all that remains at the crime scene where a possible murder took place. Police say the victim is an adult man most likely between the age of 60 to 65.

Campers say it sounded like a fight took place and the victim was beaten and then shot. One man who didn't want his face to appear on camera says he may have come face to face with the killer.

"I was just trying to be a nice guy. He was on a mountain bike. He stopped at one of the local bars and got a 24 pack of bottled beer and I just said well heck I'll give you a ride back up to Bryant Creek."

The next day the man who wishes to stay anonymous noticed all the police activity in the area.

"Jokingly I said to one of the rangers the guy you're looking for wasn't by the name of Chris was it? And that's when the interview started."

The location where the alleged homicide happened is at a non-designated campground off the beaten path. Police say they received a report of a dead body Saturday afternoon.

The body was found in an area along the Big Hole River across from the east bank recreation site. Investigators working the case have already identified two persons of interest. The anonymous source says the man he came in contact with wasn't traveling alone.

"I met the other two but I don't recall their names. His wife and a friend of theirs."

Investigators say the persons of interest may have been traveling in a motorhome and ford explorer with Montana and Washington plates.
