PASCO, WA- The Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco had its groundbreaking ceremony Friday for the expansion of its terminal.

The project will take two and a half years to complete and will go through three phases.

Airport officials want the expanded terminal to attract more travelers to use the Tri-Cities Airport instead of looking to larger ones in the region.

The tri-cities airport is the largest in southeastern Washington and the fourth largest in the state.  It has seen an increase of 100,000 enplanements in the past five years.

The new boarding area will include five gates and a larger restaurant.  The security area, baggage claim, ticket area, and the front of the terminal will also be expanded.

“I think what it's going to do for us is get service to a new destination.  We're trying to put that into position about the time that we expand the building,” said Ron Foraker, airport director.

Officials are trying to get more daily flights to Los Angeles because the majority of the airport’s passengers are traveling there.

The project is estimated to cost around $41.9 million and is funded by airport user fees and federal grants.  The airport will still be open during construction but a few of the services will be relocated.
