BMX Racing Growing in Bozeman

Posted: Updated:

Often times, families are trying to think of new ways to spend time together.

We introduce you to one family who has found a fun, definitely exciting, and a bit daring way to spend time with one another.

Today we're BMX bike riding and we're going to catch up with one family who has three generations in the sport.

"It's 40 seconds of all out power and speed as much as I can down the track."

While it may look dangerous, BMX racing is actually for people of all ages.

For instance, take the Riendeau family.

For the last four years, the kids and parents have been riding together.

"We were looking for something to do on a weekend in April,” said Amy Riendeau. “We just brought the boys down here with their little bikes just to get some energy out of them. It ended up being a race day, and saw all these people riding bikes and we thought that looked pretty nice and fun. So we decided to give it a try."

After seeing their family fall in love with the sport, even the Riendeau grandparents became involved.

"It's really fun,” Becky Riendeau said. “I get nervous for absolutely every race that they do. We're their biggest fans."

"I'm really proud,” said Dennis Riendeau. “The real thing is that it's not just winning. Certainly, there's only going to be one winner of the race, but it's about the sportsmanship and the sharing. They're learning lessons every time they're out here to race."

Learning life lessons on the track is a major reason why the Riendeau family continues to race multiple times a week.

While they do learn, it's also about spending time as a family together while having fun.

"It's something I would have never put on my radar as something we would do as a family, but it's such a unique sport that we can do it as a family," Amy Riendeau said.

"Later on tonight, my wife and I will be rooting our kids on,” said Joel Riendeau. “We turn around and get in the gate, they watch us. It's really fun. At the end of the night, we always say, "Who had fun tonight?" Everybody raises their hands. It's a good time for everybody."
