Accessibility to Mammograms for Women With Disabilities

BILLINGS -

A group of women took a tour of Billings hospitals to increase awareness of mammography accessibility for women with disabilities.

Data shows women with disabilities have an increased risk of breast cancer as they are less likely to get breast exams. But Project Accessibility is a grant program that helps communities provide quality services to women with disabilities. They also want to encourage women to get checked regularly by removing barriers, like distance or disabilities.

"We know we have terrific facilities in Montana because of the work the University of Montana has done,” said Nancy Lee, executive director of Susan G. Komen Montana. “So it's kind of giving a seal of approval to a great facility and letting people know, maybe someone with disabilities that's been avoiding or not realizing that they could come in for a mammogram."

"I hope it encourages women that this is a safe place to come, a friendly place to come and that we're going to meet their needs and take care of them and mammogram is not threatening and this is a beautiful facility," said Mary Beery, St. Vincent Healthcare oncology service line director.

Doctors attribute high survival rate among breast cancer patients to early detection from yearly mammograms and checks.

Big concerts like Tuesday night's Tim McGraw show at MetraPark aren't just good for fans - they're good for local businesses, too. Some of that money will go to retailers, but hotels and restaurants also get a boost - especially when they're close to the attraction."Depending on the e...

The Tim McGraw concert at MetraPark is one of the Magic City's biggest events of the year, with more than 8,700 tickets sold. But according to MetraPark's sales and marketing director, the concert might not have been possible without another big event in Metra history - the Father's Day Tornado. Some shows like this would have had too much gear, such as heavy stacks of speakers, for the arena a few years ago."The Father's Day Tornado tore the roof off the place, but it gave us an opportunity ...
