Lockwood Pedestrian Safety

Posted: Updated:
In January, 2013, 16-year-old Dustin Freese died after a car struck him on Becraft Lane in Lockwood. A safety advisory council formed after the accident, and after an approved mill levy this winter, the group is working to make the town safer for pedestrians

The Lockwood Sidewalk/Lighting District Advisory meets with Yellowstone County Commissioners on Tuesday, July 22 at 9:30 a.m. Board members said adding lights to power poles, instead of placing street lights on new poles, would save a lot of money, leave room for city growth and help get the project finished quickly.

The board also wants to widen Becraft Lane and Old Hardin Road so there is a shoulder to walk on, because as council member Carlotta Hecker said, the safety group believes a walking path is probably not the best solution.

"I think it makes more sense if you're looking at maintenance and knowing, 'I don't like to shovel any more than I have to,' and so if you've got a long lot, and now you've got a walking path there, it's only good if its shoveled," she said.

"We want the people of Lockwood to know that we're doing something with this, and we want to be very frugal to make sure we're getting the best value."
