National Gay Blood Drive Draws Local Support

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS - United Blood Services in Billings took part in the National Gay Blood Drive, organized to bring attention to a controversial FDA regulation.

Since 1983 the FDA has banned gay and bisexual men from donating blood, so today they brought an ally with them to donate blood on their behalf. All participants received a free t-shirt and were able to share their reason for donating. Across the country, blood drives were organized to bring attention to the ban and to garner support for a petition. Debbie Schenk donated Friday on behalf of her gay son.

"My son told me a story actually about going to donate blood when he was going to college with a friend and being told he couldn't and he had no idea,” said Schenk. “And once again – that's one more thing. Why? It just doesn't make sense. The blood is checked for everything anyway."

Organizers of the blood drive expected about 40 blood donors. Some people attended without donating, simply to show their support and sign the petition.
