UPDATE: Car Fire Caused by Punctured Gas Tank

NEAR LIVINGSTON -

Montana Highway Patrol releases the cause of the car fire in Livingston that killed a 4-year-old Billings toddler.

On a trip to Oregon, two Billings families are met with a nightmare: a car fire, which took the life of four-year-old Zaria Rey Santos.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Fetterhoff says the 2008 Subaru Impreza might have hit something along the interstate, puncturing the gas tank. He says the driver of the car that was following the Impreza noticed leaking fluid and they pulled over. When the Impreza stopped, it overheated and burst into flames.

According to Trooper Fetterhoff, Zaria's mother was driving the Impreza with her children and two other girls. The dad of the other girls was following. Four people escaped, but suffered burns. The father, who was following in the other car, is still in the hospital for burns after pulling the kids out. The two girls sitting next to Zaria were also sent to the hospital, but one has been treated and released.
