Man Pleads Not Guilty to Deliberate Homicide

BILLINGS -

The man accused of stabbing Billings philanthropist and photographer, Michael Sample, appears in court.

Zachariah Wiseman, 23, pled not guilty to deliberate homicide with weapons enhancement. Charging documents indicate Wiseman was under the influence of a drug at the time of the incident.

In June, police responded to a report of a stabbing and found two men holding Wiseman on the ground. Court documents indicate a knife was next to them. Sample had multiple stab wounds and later died from his injuries in the hospital.

The court documents also say Wiseman told officers he was asking sample if he could work for money. He told officers he remembers Sample was inappropriate, and then says he blacked out, later saying, Sample must have fallen on the knife.

In an interview with Wiseman's girlfriend, officers learned Wiseman believed Sample would have a large amount of cash after lunch. She also told officers Wiseman regularly used meth and was increasingly violent.

Wiseman is being held in the Yellowstone County Detention Facility on a $500,000 bond.
