German Ballplayers Reunite in Missoula

Posted: Updated:
Osprey outfielder Maik Ehmcke is one of eight German minor league baseball players in the entire country. In a sport dominated by North and Latin American players he's a bit of an outsider, that is until he found out he would be playing alongside a fellow German.

"Well first when he signed the club in Arizona told me asking if I knew Markus Solbach because we just signed him. I then freaked out in the locker room and then when the rosters came out and I saw both of our names on the roster I said yea it's going to be a fun time in Missoula," said Ehmcke.

So not only are two out of the eight German players in the entire minor league system on the same team, but they also played against each other back in Germany. Both say it's been nice just to be able to talk to someone else in their native tongue.

"Having Maik here is incredible, just having someone from home you don't get homesick that's the major point," said Osprey Pitcher Markus Solbach.

"It's nice because it makes me feel like home again and we can communicate in our home and native language," said Ehmcke.

Markus and Maik say they speak only German when communicating with one another and it's become their secret language that has their teammates intrigued.

"They always wonder what we are talking about and they ask us questions. We actually got people to start saying stuff to each other in German. The other day i got someone to say how are you doing and the other to say good and you in German, so it was cool to see that," said Solbach.

As we celebrate the Fourth of July the two Germans, sporting their American flag jerseys look forward to their Fourth of July experiences.

"No I have never been here for a Fourth of July but it's definitely nice to wear this jersey especially today and tomorrow on the Fourth of July," said Ehmcke.

"I actually looked at the schedule when I first got told I was going to start on the Fourth of July and I didn't know what to expect and now that we got these jerseys i am really excited," said Solbach.
