Butte Celebrates 4th of July

Posted: Updated:
BUTTE -

From the moment the first parade walkers made their entrance, the cheering never stopped as people in Butte celebrated the Fourth of July. Up and down Harrison Avenue, crowds lined the street to catch a glimpse of all the action. One woman visiting from St. Louis Missouri said that she is impressed with the effort put into all the floats.

"Wonderful, wonderful floats, yes, I love your floats, creativity everywhere,"

It was floats galore. Organizers said that more than 20 floats cruised through the street. Paraders and spectators proudly waived their flags, and if you forgot your stars and stripes, there were plenty being handed out.

It was an eclectic mix of scenery. There was the typical law enforcement motorcade, fire trucks, horses and marching bands. And then there were the belly dancers, the zombies, and the derby girls. We caught up with Angela Welles from the Copper City Queens Roller Derby team. This is the team's first year skating in the parade, and Welles said that she is skating with a purpose. "The most exciting thing about to today is representing the veterans and the individuals in the military,"

One pair of siblings was asked what their favorite part of the holiday was.

"You get to celebrate the Fourth of July and see the parade and all the floats," Samantha Kehn of Butte said.

"Seeing all the parade floats and stuff and the cars honking their horns. Setting off fireworks hanging out."

The captain of the Little Basin Creek Volunteer Fire Company said he almost ran over a little kid and quote crowd control was terrible. But Brad Belke, who is the commander of Butte's 1590 Search and Rescue, said this year's parade was almost problem free. "We had one unit we had to caution a little bit about their driving, and then we had a lost child but we found the child so we're good."

Belke also said in his 34 years of patrolling this may be the parade's best year yet.

This year's parade had a total of 107 entries.
