Billings Cheers on Team USA in Crucial World Cup Match

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS - The World Cup is taking America by storm and it's kicking up a lot of excitement in Billings.

"I believe that we will win, I believe that we will win!"

Despite the early start, Billings packed Hooligans Sports Bar for team USA's big match.

"A lot of people had to skip work, skip class. Were you part of that group?"

"I was, I'm actually missing work, and class," said Kellen Kessler.

"Was that a pretty easy decision for you?"

"Oh yeah, definitely."

"I scheduled my shift so I started at 6am and was out in time for the game," said Eoin Hurley, a former MSUB soccer player from Ireland.

"I actually saved up to be able to take a month off of work, just so I could support the World Cup, said fellow former Jackets soccer player Clifton Thomas.

"I'm a flight attendant, and we just happened to be here at a time that worked for the game," said Mollie Pollaro.

"I took the day off, months ago, after I heard of the schedule," said Rich Smith.

Yeah the game started at 10am, but when you come to watch team USA, time is just a number.

"Time is irrelevant," said Hurley. "You're watching a soccer game, you've got to drink, you've got to drink."

"I expected to serve a lot of coffee, but it's been drinks instead," said Josh Moore, bartender at Hooligan's.

"With people missing work, the US was going to lose about $390 million in work power. Do you feel bad now?"

"No, no. This is perfect," said Kessler. "I'd much rather do this then work."

The US needed just a draw to move on, and after a scoreless first half, the 55th minute took the crowd on an emotional roller coaster.

After a brilliant save from the USA's Tim Howard, a Thomas Muller rebound goal gave Germany a 1-0 lead they wouldn't give up.

But sadness quickly changed to happiness. A 2-1 Portugal win over Ghana kept the red, white and blue's World Cup dream alive, sending the US to the Round of 16 via goal differential.

"Advancing through the group of death, we don't need a win," said Thomas. "We still have crazy momentum because we advanced."

That's a reason to celebrate.

It's the first time ever team USA has made the Round of 16 in back to back World Cups.

They'll now face Belgium next Tuesday at 2pm
