Teen Celebrates End of Chemo

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS - After multiple surgeries and dozens of chemotherapy sessions, a teenage cancer patient at Billings Clinic celebrated her last chemo treatment on Thursday afternoon.

Fourteen year-old Olivia Clyde, surrounded by family and friends, symbolically knocked down a piñata with the word "cancer" written on it. Olivia just finished her 29th chemotherapy session -- and she's ready to go home.

"I don't really want to be here all the time, but I like seeing the people here and hanging out with the nurses," she said. "But then when I'm here, I don't really get to see my friends, so I'm excited I get to go see my friends."

Last September, Olivia was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer called Osteosarcoma. The cancerous bone in Olivia's arm was removed, and replaced with her tibia.

Olivia lives with her parents and three brothers in Gillette, Wyo., but for months, she's traveled to Billings Clinic for treatment. Olivia's mom -- Kristine Clyde -- said she's developed a close bond with the clinic's staff and other patients.

"She's been really strong through it," she said. "It's been hard because she's had to leave her friends, but the staff has been wonderful. I couldn't ask for a better staff -- the nurses have just been wonderful with her."

"They mean a lot to me, and it's going to be sad to not see them every week," Olivia said. "But I'll be able to come up and say hi sometimes."

Olivia has one more surgery later this month, but the cancer has been completely surgically removed. The American Cancer Society reports that Osteosarcoma affects teenagers more than any other age group.
