Community March Highlights Battle Against Prescription Drug Abuse

BILLINGS -

The 17th annual March Against Drugs and Violence drew hundreds this weekend.

This year's march focused on the abuse of prescription drugs and what is being done to fight the issue. The program highlighted the prescription drug drop boxes around town and the purchase of a new drop box at the Laurel police station. Organizers say it's encouraging to see so many young people at the event, getting an education at an early age.

"If it's addressed in elementary and younger ages, they don't take it later on,” said Mike Yakawich, the march’s chairman. “That’s what's really amazing that we're finding out. If kids are doing this now, and then in high school, they're not doing it later."

The event had speeches from Secretary of State Linda McCulloch, prescription drug abuse survivors, and local law enforcement. After speeches, participants walked around downtown.

Susanne Rodell faced a difficult situation. Hail storm damage to her roof led to an insurance claim being filed. Rodell picked a local contractor to fix her roof, but mother nature did not cooperate. While the roofing company was in the middle of fixing her roof, a weekend of rain caused water damage to dry wall and ceilings within the house.
