Heart and Sole Run Encourages Activity

BILLINGS -

Rain didn't stop runners from competing this weekend. It was all about health and fitness at Dehler Park for the annual Heart and Sole Run.

"We organized a team,” said Melissa Sharp, a 5K participant. “We got these sweet shirts. Some of the girls at work wanted to run so we just organized a team. We did it last year too."

It wasn't just because it's a fun event. It’s about raising awareness for overall health, especially since these nurses work in the pediatric department.

"You know with kids we see a lot more things that can't be prevented but I think there's a lot of things we can do as people outside,” said Jeni Lee Knutson. “You know, get around and do things and then you don't have to be sick and in the hospital."

Sharp says the cause is important for children to learn about. “So they can live a long healthy life and teach generations behind them health and living."

After running the 10K, 5K, or 2K, participants could go through the Montana Active Life Festival. Booths provided people with information promoting healthy lifestyles.

Organizers say proceeds from the run will go toward YMCA community scholarships and BikeNet to improve the Billings trail system.

Streets that run for several blocks, without a single street light. It is a dark reality many residents throughout the Magic City face when the sun goes down. Leo Robinson lives on Monad Rd., east of 24th Street. He said if street lights were placed on Monad, safety for everyone would improve. Terry Smith, City Traffic Engineer, said the city is more than willing to work with anyone, on any street, which lacks street lights.
