Breakfast and Weight Loss

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS - For decades, studies have widely confirmed that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but a recent study muddies the water.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study on the effectiveness of breakfast recommendations on weight loss.

Breakfast is associated with lower body weight in observational studies, the study says. Public health authorities commonly recommend breakfast consumption to reduce obesity, but the effectiveness of adopting these recommendations for reducing body weight is unknown.

In the study, hundreds of dieters who skipped breakfast lost as much weight as those who ate breakfast. And while breakfast has many health benefits, the study claims that weight loss probably isn't one of them.

However, Billings Clinic Nutritionist Lisa Ranes says wight loss is about lifestyle changes, not short term dieting.

"When you're looking at weight loss, and the benefits of eating breakfast or skipping breakfast -- you really need to look at it long term," she said.

The study had nearly 200 participants, and took place over four months.
