Columbia Falls Explosion Causes No Hospitalizations

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA FALLS - An explosion rocks Columbia Falls, but takes no one to the hospital.

Flathead county dispatch received the report, coming from the Plum Creek fiberboard plant, just before 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

At least six agencies from as far away as West Valley and Kalispell responded to a report of an explosion at the Plum Creek mill. Trucks were even being filled with dirty runoff and driving up toward the smoke. Flathead county sheriff Chuck Curry says the explosion happened inside one of the buildings and caused a fire. The flames stayed in only that building though, as officials shut of power and gas to the area.

Curry confirms that all the employees were evacuated and accounted for without any bad injuries. There were some cases of smoke inhalation, but nobody had to go to the hospital.

"It's very fortunate in this instance that everyone survived with no injuries," said Curry.

The Columbia Falls Fire Department will keep looking into what caused the whole thing. A statement from the company says "it's too soon to know."

"There's no danger to surrounding homes or people around that general area," explained Curry.

Some of the roads around the plant like Best Way and Truck Route have started opening back up and should be back to normal by Wednesday morning.
