WALLA WALLA, WA - Crime in Walla Walla has been making headlines this week. It all started with a gang fight at a gas station on Rose Street last Sunday. Since then, four more incidents have led to a small town on edge.

It seems a lot worse than it really is, though. A Walla Walla officer told NBC Right Now that crime, in general, is actually down from last year. First there was a very public gang fight at the Cenex convenience store but the officer's response was quick and thorough. All the people involved are facing charges and police recovered all of the weapons from each rival gang.

All of this, despite a department that is still struggling to get to full staff.

"We're certainly no worse off than we were last year, maybe a little bit better. But, when we have these cases and we're moving into the summer months where officers are taking vacation time, it really puts a tight hold on our man power," said Officer Tim Bennett.

Two of the incidents this week involved guns. Officer Bennett said from May 1st to June 6th there have been nine reports of shots fires. Last year at the same time there were 13.
