Billings Man Reminisces About D-Day

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS - June 6, 2014 marks 70 years since thousands of American soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy. Veterans served in many different ways that day to secure America's freedom.

Billings native Bill Bakker is one of the veterans who played a part in the Allies' victory. He performed maintenance on aircraft-carrier planes during World War II. He says some memories have faded, but he remembers fueling planes during the early-morning hours before the invasion.

"We got it done i guess," he said. "It's something to be proud of -- that you helped keep the country free."

Bakker joined the U.S. Army in December 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and served for three years before he was honorably discharged.
