Billings Clinic Honors Diabetes Survivors

BILLINGS -

Billings Clinic held a ceremony honoring more than 40 Billings Clinic diabetes patients who have successfully managed their diabetes with insulin for more than 25 years.

One patient, Donald Mather, has lived with diabetes for 69 years.

Mather says when he was younger nobody knew much about diabetes.

Mather says the process of managing diabetes has dramatically improved, noting he was not able to check his blood sugar when he was younger, but can do that now with just a prick of the finger.

Mather's wife of 45 years, Alice, says they have to work every day to monitor Donald's disease, but says there are others who definitely deserve a lot of credit.

"We've gotta give his parents a lot of credit," says Alice.

"They had to weigh all my food and then give me a certain amount of insulin. Everyday it was the same and then they weighed the food. I grew up hungry, I was always hungry, but that's the way they knew to kind of regulate it," says Donald.

Donald says whether you're young or old, you have to monitor your diabetes and take care of it.

The Mather's say they are both very thankful to each and every doctor who has helped Donald throughout his life, and hope a cure can be developed in the very near future.
