Watch Out for Scammers

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS -

As insurance adjustors are looking at homes for hail damage, the Montana Office of Securities and Insurance asks consumers to remain vigilant.

Scammers will either go door-to-door or call, offering their services. Chief legal counsel Jesse Laslovich says the first red flag is someone contacting you to fix your home. You should also be suspicious if they insist on having you sign something right away or if someone asks to represent you instead of your insurance company.

"People just need to be very vigilant and trust, but verify,” he says. “When folks say they can do the work, make sure they're a licensed contractor, asking your neighbors, friends, family, if they've heard of this person. Those are the easy things you can do."

If you think you have been contacted by an insurance scammer or are a victim of a scam, you can contact the office at 1-800-332-6148.
