A Tale of Hannah's: Big Sky Girls Track and Field

Posted: Updated:
The Big Sky Eagles boys track team took home the state team title last year, and this season, the Eagles girls look posed to compete for the same distinction, what makes them a little more unique, is one commonality many of the girls share.

The Big Sky girls track and field team has seen plenty of success on the year, and expect to compete for a state title this upcoming weekend, the heart of their team, also share the same name.

"This is the most Hannah's I've ever been around, and it's funny because we'll be on the bus on the way to a track meet, and I always look over my shoulder to see who says it, and I'm never the one being called after,"says Big Sky junior Hannah Porch.

"Whenever anyone says Hannah, people think it's a joke when we're talking together and we all turn and look at the same time," says Big Sky sophomore Hannah Kearns.

In fact, there are Five Hannah's on the team, in addition to an Anna, and an Ana.

"It's a lot of Hannah's.  We all go by Hannah, but there are a lot of us that get called their last names or 'Champ' or 'You over here, come over here!' but it's usually Hannah so we all look and no one knows who they're talking to," says Big Sky Sophomore Hannah Coburn.

Having the same name is fun in itself, but what makes it more impressive is the level of success all seven of the girls have had.

"They're just tearing up most of the meets.  Our relay team has the number one time in the state, and it's going to have to get faster and faster, because teams are coming after you all the time, so they've had the great success up to this point and hopefully they build on it," says Big Sky head coach Dan Nile.

The shining star of the Hannah and Anna group is the 4x100 meter relay, which features three Hannah's, and an Ana, who set a divisional record of 48.52 seconds last weekend, which happens to be the fastest time in the history of Montana…and the girls credit their success to their close relationship away from the track.

"I hangout with Hannah Porch and Hannah Coburn almost every weekend. I  love them, and they are some of my closest friends.  It's pretty cool that we're all on the same relay team with Ana Jarrett of course, so that's pretty unique," says Hannah Kearns

"I feel like we're all really close, we're all friends, and we get along well which is important, and we all say a team prayer before we go out and run, and I love that, so it's good,"

As the team with the fastest time in the state, plenty of teams will be looking to knock them off the top spot, something that doesn't worry the Eagles.

"I don't think we feel as much pressure because we have been number one, so I think once we get there, we already have that confidence that we're going to succeed and do well, and each day at practice we're pushing each other at practice so we can (do well),"says Coburn.
