Montana State Police Search for Men Armed with Rifle on Campus

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN - Law enforcement lock down Montana State University for a couple of hours on Wednesday after a caller reported seeing two men carrying a black rifle across campus.

"We feel confident that we have swept the campus. We haven't found anybody and that's why we're telling people they can go back to business as usual," said Tracy Ellig, MSU spokesman. "The person made the call to law enforcement about 10 to 15 minutes after observing them. Then, we began the alert process and began sweeping."

The lock down began around nine o'clock on Wednesday morning and was lifted just before 11. During the lock down, people were asked to stay inside, keep doors locked and report any suspicious activity.

Law enforcement swept campus for more than two hours, but did not locate the suspects.

A vehicle with two men matching the suspects descriptions was stopped and searched near 11th and Story Street. But, they were let go.
Ellig said right now the safety concern on campus is low.

"Our suspicion at this time is that there was someone out there carrying a gun," said Ellig. "It may have been a student checking out at the end of semester, but we don't know that for certain."

Paul Bennett was working inside the SUB when campus was locked down. He said he was not too worried when law enforcement arrived.

"I don't think there was a lot of panic," said Bennett. "It didn't seem like it was that big of a There were were police officers walking across campus scooping out all of the buildings. Then, there were other administrators trying to figure out what was going on and what to do next."

Ellig said the university continues to look for ways to make sure students and faculty are aware of emergency situations on campus.

"There will always be a desire for these alerts to go out more quickly . We're always looking for ways to improve that, but in general the process went pretty smoothly today," said Ellig.

The first male suspect is described as wearing a hunter orange hoodie. The second male suspect is described as wearing a gray or green jacket and ball cap.

If you have seen anyone that matches these descriptions, you are asked to call MSU Police at 994-2121.

UPDATE: The lock down of MSU's campus is lifted.  Police have checked the main campus buildings and found no signs of individuals matching the descriptions. They say the threat level is low and they will continue to monitor campus throughout the day.

Two men were detained at 11th and West Story for matching the description of the suspects. After a search of their car they were released.
