Student Threatens Kennewick Middle School on Facebook

Posted: Updated:
KENNEWICK, WA-- A security threat posted online and directed at a Kennewick middle school, led to a police investigation and a letter home to parents.

A recent letter sent home to parents from Park Middle School explains how a student made a threat on Facebook.

A parent reported the threat and Kennewick police began an investigation.

Police say the prosecutor's office advised them not to arrest the student and said the school district should handle it. The student was disciplined with an emergency expulsion.

Park Middle School principal Kevin Pierce says communicating threat concerns is key to protecting students.

"Safety is a top priority. We want to make sure that if parents have heard anything or information is out there that they understood that we were dealing with this and it was a top priority. We're basically making sure students were safe here," Pierce said.

Kennewick police say they will forward a full report to the prosecutor's office for review. Police also say the threatening Facebook post was quickly taken down after the report was made.

School administrators and police encourage people to communicate with the school and law enforcement if there are any threat concerns.
