Equine Herpes Virus Detected

BILLINGS -

Here's a warning for horse owners.

Two cases of Equine Herpes Virus have been confirmed, one in Kansas and one in Wisconsin.

Both horses were recently at a barrel racing event in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Horse owners should be very cautious because this respiratory virus is highly contagious.

There is no vaccine to treat this form of herpes. However, there are other vaccines that will boost the immune system to help fight the virus.

"We can have extremely serious consequences and so we want to identify any at risk individuals. We want to minimize spread because it is highly contagious and we want to try to avoid other horses getting sick," says Dr. Beth Davis, an Equine Specialist from Kansas State University.

Equine Herpes Virus does not affect people but people can spread the disease if it is on their hands, clothes or vehicle.
