BILLINGS -  Thousands of unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs were dropped off at the Elks Lodge Saturday, as a part of the Billings Police Department's prescription drug take back program.

Officer Tom Keightley said it's important to clean out your medicine cabinet because children can end up in the emergency room from accidentally taking pills. He said by collecting these drugs, law enforcement can properly dispose of them and keep drugs out of the landfill and water supply.

According to police, prescription drug abuse is a growing problem. Officer Keightley said some home invasions may be linked to addicts looking for prescription pills, especially painkillers.

"The part that's so problematic is that it doesn't seem to be one small group," he said. "We found them in the middle schools and all the way up to people in their 70's."
