More Victims Reporting Sexual Assaults

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS -

More victims of sexual assault are coming forward in Yellowstone County, according to data from Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program better known as SANE.

It's been more than a year since serial rapist Toby Griego raped his first victim and the SANE program says there has been a significant increase in reporting sexual assaults since last year.

Reporting a sexual assault isn't the easiest for victims. But Billings Clinic has seen more victims step forward. 120 visited the sane program last year, a 46 percent increase. Sexual assault nurse examiners say 34 percent of the patients were children and 6 percent were men.

Sexual assault cases are tough to prosecute.

"Often times, there's a dynamic," said Scott Twito, Yellowstone County attorney. "There could be a family dynamic. It could be a relationship dynamic. Often times sex crimes are perpetrated behind closed doors where there's only one witness"

Twito says, in general, there has been an increase in felony offenses in 2013, but he hasn't necessarily seen an increase in sexual assault cases brought to his office since serial rapist Toby Griego's case.

"We have had sex crimes that we've done our best to deal with, to reach out to victims, and make sure they're investigated properly and if we can prosecute them, we have been. We'll continue to prosecute those cases appropriately and do the best we can."
