Officer's Name Released in Monday Night's Shooting

BILLINGS -

The Billings Police Department releases the name of the officer involved in the shooting late Monday night.

They say Officer Grant Morrison shot 38-year-old Richard Ramirez. Morrison is a five-year veteran of the Billings Police Department. He was involved in another officer-involved shooting last February, and a coroner's inquest ruled it as justified.

Late Monday night, police say Morrison saw Ramirez, an armed robbery suspect, in a car and followed. The car pulled into an alley and stopped and Morrison went up to the car with no weapon drawn, and commanded the occupants to keep their hands up. Police say Ramirez moved his hands up and down and, when he looked like he reached down, the officer shot him.

Billings Police say after the arrest of Jason Ramirez, one of Richard Ramirez' brothers wanted by the Montana Violent Offenders Task Force, they feel the threat against the officer is lowered. Another brother, Daniel, is still wanted on warrants.

Firefighters are wrapping up their work on a blaze northwest of Cody. The Dillworth Fire, which was visible from the Chief Joseph Highway, grew to only six acres. It’s indicative of the mild fire season in the Shoshone National Forest and Yellowstone so far this summer.
