The Family Tree Center now has a national designation, and it's a long one. It's also known as the Nurturing Parenting Program's Family Nurturing Center of Montana.

Wednesday, The Family Tree Center held a training session and invited program creator, Stephen Bavolek. He worked to empower parents and help them develop higher levels of empathy and discipline, but he said children should not be hit for behavior that parents feel is unacceptable.

"Well that's just loving parenting. We're hitting people because we care about them. Well that only goes so far. I encourage people, if you need to check that out, just look up the word "love" in the dictionary, and see if you find anything related to violence, and there's not," said Bavolek

Bavolek said empathy is the most important characteristic of parenting.
