"It Makes it Hard to Sleep at Night," Neighbors Concerned Over Suspicious Fires

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA - Scott Howe has trouble sleeping lately.

"It makes it hard to sleep at night, let me tell you," said Howe. "You more or less, when you go to sleep but you're not really asleep, you're awake wondering if anything's going on. The motion light comes on or dogs bark, you get up and go look to see what's going on now."

Seven fires in the past three weeks. The most recent one just happened Wednesday late afternoon near Pleasant Avenue. The fire completely destroyed a shed.

"How concerning is this for you?"

"Quite," said Howe. "Just because it's right in the neighborhood, and having my garage right next to the alleyway too. It's just not good. They can throw anything over the fence or on it and catch it on fire."

Firefighters said the suspicious fires are happening in the same area. Generally, they're popping up between South 14th Avenue and South 8th Avenue, intersecting with Pleasant and Hamm Avenues.

"Everybody thinks it's someone that lives in the neighborhood, but they just haven't figured out who it is," said Howe.

Yakima firefighters said the arsons are still under investigation, and there are no suspects or persons of interest being named right now. Firefighters want to remind people to properly dispose of garbage and keep garbage cans secured behind a fence or in a well-lit area.

Firefighters said the majority of these arsons start by lighting fire to trash and the flames spread to nearby buildings.

SPOKANE, Wash. - One of the great parts about living in Spokane, is if you head out of town in any direction, you're going to run into some beautiful farm land. I grew up south of Spokane, near Plaza, and one of my favorite things to do was to sit on the porch at night and stare south towards Rosalia at all of the rolling hills of wheat, lentils, barley and peas.
