Evel Knievel Days Planning Turns into Feud

BUTTE -

In a report by Cowles Montana reporter Rob Jesselson, the feud over Evel Knievel Days took a nasty turn late last week, when the late daredevil's son left threatening voice messages with the Evel Knievel Days committee chairman.

"You're going to sign that agreement with Butte-Silver Bow, and you're going to move along as the director of the committee and change your ways, or I'm going to destroy you," said Kelly Knievel in a voicemail of Chad Harrington, the Evel Knievel Days committee chairman.

"I probably had a few too many cocktails and let my anger get the best of me," Knievel said about the messages.

Knievel and Harrington are feuding over a tentative agreement offered to the non-profit committee by the county that would designate what each party was accountable for, regarding the festival.

It's the same agreement the county has with all the other festival committees.

"Why would a group of volunteers refuse expertise and help in building a bigger and better event?" Knievel said.

In the past Kelly Knievel, Evel's son and owner of the Evel Knievel naming rights, has allowed the festival to use his father's brand name for free.

Since the current committee won't work with the county, Knievel says he's forming a new committee that will.

"We're looking for accountability, transparency, by-laws that are followed, a proper licensing agreement, and insurance," said Knievel. "That's what any legitimate business would do."

Knievel says the new committee would also be made up of volunteers from Butte.

KTMF attempted to get in contact with Chad Harrington numerous times, he did not return our calls.

Chief Executive Matt Vincent says he hopes an agreement is made with the festival, but either way, Evel Knievel Days will be held in Butte this summer.
