Competency Hearing Date Set for Triple Homicide Suspect

BILLINGS -

A federal district judge sets the date for a competency hearing for the suspect in a triple homicide in Lodge Grass.

Sheldon Bernard Chase's hearing is scheduled for May 8th, after being delayed several times. He was charged with shooting his grandmother, cousin, and cousin's boyfriend at their home near Lodge Grass in October 2011. Authorities claim chase suffers from an unspecified mental illness.

The civil commitment proceedings against the 24-year-old are in Missouri where chase has been in a Federal Bureau of Prisons since January of last year. If a judge determines he is a danger to the public, he could be put into a state or federal institution indefinitely.

Chase's criminal case on three counts of first-degree murder is on hold pending the civil matter.
