Cobell Settlement Hearing Complaints

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Tribal leaders from Montana, as well as other states, met in Washington on Thursday to talk about the federal land buyback program.

The Cobell Settlement, $3.4 billion payout approved by Congress in 2012, repays individual Indian landowners for mismanaged money held in a trust.

The leaders feel they've been shut out of the decision making process.

The Department of Interior is currently trying to identify parcels of land for purchase and turning them over to the tribes.

Those Indian leaders told the congressional panel the program needs to be changed to be completed in the 10-year timeline.

They also want more transparency and fewer delays.
