Keystone Meeting

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS -

A local spotlight will shine on the Keystone XL pipeline Tuesday.

Local and national leaders will gather at MetraPark for a discussion surrounding the pipeline.

The talk will be moderated by Yellowstone County Commissioner, Bill Kennedy, and will feature panelists such as Rear Admiral Donald P. Loren of the US Navy and Veterans For Energy.

Loren says Veterans For Energy is an organization which supports the Keystone XL pipeline.

"It's an easy decision to make. It's for the benefit of the Nation. It's for the benefit of our national security, and I believe the last environmental report from the State Department is the last thing required to make the right decision," said Loren.

The public is invited to attend, but you must contact Barb Skelton of Montana Energy Forum. You can email her at skelgatz@earthlink.net or call 406-245-4076.

Admiral Loren acknowledges the argument the pipeline would damage the environment, but he says the U.S. can use its abundant resources and still be good stewards of the planet.

Several counties in our area have issued fire restrictions. Yellowstone County has issued Stage One fire restriction, which limit campfires and smoking areas. Carbon County has moved on to Stage Two restrictions, which set limits on certain work that can be done during the hot hours of the day. Decisions like these aren't just made by the county, however. They actually take a lot of coordination between different agencies."We try to work very hard to coordinate that," says Carmen Thomason, wh...
