Working Multiple Jobs

BILLINGS -

A recent report shows Montana's unemployment rate dropped in January, to one of the lowest rates in the nation, at 5.3 percent.

Montana's Labor Commissioner attributes the low rate to job growth. While there are many job opportunities, some families still must work several jobs to make ends meet.

"In the morning, get the baby ready," Alyssa Brown said. "Drop her off, usually with my mom, and then I go to class. Come home. Make lunch real quick before my next class. And then I come home for a couple hours and then I go to work. I work 3 to midnight usually."

Brown is a mom and a student and works two jobs at the same time. Her mom and friends help babysit her daughter, one-year-old Hope. Brown says with the rising costs of gas and groceries, it's getting harder for her and her husband to make ends meet.

"It just seems like no matter how many hours we work something always pops up, like a bill or something," she said. "Both of us have to work two jobs in order to pay all the bills and everything. I'm still trying to go to school and it's tough. But hopefully after school I can find a job where I don't have to work two jobs."

This spring, Brown will graduate from MSU Billings with a degree in business management.

"I'm very proud of her that she has continued with school and hasn't quit because there have been so many opportunities for her just to say I give up and she didn't," Darla Zier, Alyssa's mom, said. "She has the drive to do it, which I'm so fortunate, so glad for her."

Brown says one day, she wants to own a business, like a restaurant.

"Just get a job that I like and more time for me and my family," Brown said.

The state minimum wage is at $7.90, which is higher than the federal minimum wage.
