Avalanche Near Cooke City Claims One Man

COOKE CITY -

An 18-year-old man was killed by an Avalanche in Cooke City.

According to the Park County Sheriff's Office, around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Yellowstone Park Dispatch received a report of a snowmobiler buried in an avalanche in the Daisy Pass – Crown Butte area.

Five members of the Park County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team responded.

The young man from Lake Lillian Minnesota was found 6 feet below the surface around 5:10 p.m.

He did not have a rescue beacon.

The man was with a group of six other friends and was sitting on his snowmobile about halfway up the slope when the avalanche hit.

One other person in the group, trying to outrun the avalanche, was hit but was only slightly injured.

The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center will investigate on Wednesday.

The avalanche was estimated to be 500 feet wide, 600 feet long and 20 feet deep in some areas.
