Transient Denies Check Scam

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS -

A local man denies his involvement in a check-cashing scam that took Billings banks for nearly $100,000.

On Tuesday, Christopher McKeen entered a plea of not guilty to two felony counts of Forgery by Accountability. According to the Deputy County Attorney, a group from Georgia traveled to Billings, and they relied on transients to cash bad checks. The group bought the transients breakfast and clothes and offered them cash - ranging from $200 to $400. The scammers then persuaded the transients to dress in construction clothes and cash forged checks at area banks as members of a construction company. Judge Russel Fagg set bond at $7,500.
