Snow Causes Snow Blowers and Shovels Shortage

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS -

We've been getting so much snow, some stores around town are completely out of snow blowers and shovels.

While it's still possible to find these items, it might take more hunting to find what you need or you might have to wait until a new shipment comes in. People are gearing up for snow in other ways too.

"We're going to get some groceries tonight and make sure that we're stocked up and just kind of hunker down and stay inside," said Dave Fox, a Billings resident.

Georgia Lukkes had the same idea.

"Stocking up on groceries," she said. "We're going to stay home. We're planning to go somewhere this weekend so now that is canceled. So we're probably just hanging out at the Metra watching the Laurel Locomotives play basketball."

People are getting ready to stay inside and they're picking up snow supplies even though they're hard to find. Fox is looking for a new snow shovel because his is worn out.

"Procrastination is my worst enemy and it bit me again this year," he said. "So had I been more prepared I would've not had this issue today."

Steve Hovis, a sales associate at King's Ace Hardware, says the store got a shipment on Tuesday, but snow shovels and snow blowers sold out almost immediately. He said the demand is still high, so they're bringing in another shipment Friday. Hovis said it's been an unusual season.

"At the end of the year, of winter, we've always had snow throwers left that we keep 'til next season and have to store them up high around here," Hovis said. "This is the first year that we're totally out of them. And hopefully after this weekend, the ones we bring in, we'll be able to sell those."

For now, people keep reminding themselves spring is just around the corner.

"It's Montana," Fox said. "It's still February. It's something that I keep telling myself I have to realize. I also have to realize that the 20th of March is coming up and hopefully spring will come that day. So we'll see what happens."

ZooMontana also wants to remind people the zoo will be closed to the public this weekend because of the cold temperatures.
