National Earned Income Credit Awareness Day

Posted: Updated:

Friday is National Earned Income Credit Awareness Day, so VITA volunteers want to make sure qualified workers receive all available tax credits.

The earned income credit, or EIC, is a tax benefit for working people who earn lower or moderate incomes. It's designed to help people break out of the cycle of poverty by supplementing low incomes. According to national estimates, 20 to 25 percent of eligible workers do not claim EIC benefits. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) organizers say even if you don't make enough money to file this year, you may still qualify to receive a refund from the IRS with the EIC.

"We already have had a taxpayer come into our site, not realizing that she had qualified for the earned income tax credit," said Jace Christensen, HRDC coordinator. "Her refund was over $5,000, and the first thing she said was 'I can buy a car!' because she didn't have reliable transportation for her and her children, so that was really great."

If you want to find out if you qualify for the credit, you can visit any VITA location.
