Olympics 101: Hockey, Part 3

BILLINGS -

The Winter Olympics are starting next week. As we count down to the games, we're teaming up with local athletes to share a better understanding of the sports. For a closer look at some key hockey terms, we teamed up with the Billings Bulls.

The point refers to a position near the edge of the rink just inside the blue line of the opposing team. It can also refer directly to a player set up in that spot. "You'll hear it in offensive situations where they'll move the puck to the point - which is the "D" or forward that's standing up near the blue line, and try to cause opportunities at the net," says Bulls assistant coach Joe Depulta. A shot from the point can create chances in several ways. A hard shot can beat a goalie outright, the shot could be redirected on the way to the net, or a second chance could come from a rebound to a teammate in front of the net.

"The slot area is between the face-off dots. It's a high-scoring area," explains Bulls goaltender Daniel Oordt. The area is directly in front of the goalie, usually giving a player a better angle to take a shot.

One of the most effective ways to score a goal is a one-timer. "A one-timer is when the player with the puck passes the puck to a teammate. The other player doesn't catch the puck, but he shoots it right away instead, hopefully trying to catch the goalie off guard or a bit slow, where there's going to be room to score," explains Oordt. Since it often requires a goalie to move laterally, there is a good chance the goalie will not be able to get into position to make a save. "If you're good and fast at it, like Alex Ovechkin in the NHL... he's amazing at it, so he scores with it quite a bit," says Bulls forward Dexter Nealy. As of the writing of this story, Ovechkin leads the NHL with 38 goals.  He'll be representing Russia in Sochi.
