Olympics 101: Hockey, Part 2

BILLINGS -

The Winter Olympics are just around the corner, and we'll be showing them on the NBC family of networks. As we count down the days, we'll be sharing some key terms and nuances with the help of local athletes to help you cheer on Team USA. We hit the ice with the Billings Bulls to shine the spotlight on hockey.

"Off-sides is when one of your teammates is carrying in a puck and another teammate crosses the blue line before the puck does," explains Bulls player Colter Endy. To be off-side, both of a player's skates must be across the blue line ahead of the puck. An off-side results in a stoppage of play and a face-off. "If it's an intentional off-side, then the face-off will go all the way back to the defensive zone," says Bulls assistant coach Joe Deptula.

Hooking is a minor penalty. "Hooking is where the guy will put his stick usually in the guy's midsection and will interfere with him and make it where he's unable to make a play," says Deptula. The offending player receives a two minute penalty.

Another minor penalty is interference. "Interference is where somebody will prevent somebody else from getting to the puck or hit somebody without the puck," says Deptula. Interference also includes other ways of distracting or impeding a player without the puck, such as setting a screen or preventing a player from retrieving a dropped piece of equipment. Interference results in a two minute penalty.
