Olympics 101: Hockey, Part 1

BILLINGS -

The Winter Olympics are just around the corner, and we'll be showing them on the NBC family of networks. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be sharing some key terms and nuances with the help of local athletes to help you cheer on Team USA.

The Billings Bulls teamed up with us to share some key terms to know about hockey goalies.

A "poke check" is a defensive move that can be used by any defender, but is particularly used by a goalie during breakaways or 2-on-1 rushes. The goalie will simply poke his stick at the puck to knock it away from an opposing player.

The "five-hole" is the space between a goalie's legs. "Obviously, for me, it's the worst spot to get scored on," says Bulls goalie Daniel Oordt. The name stems from the various parts of the net that a goalie has to defend to make a save - the four corners of the net, and between the legs. It can be difficult for players to score between the legs when a goaltender is ready for a shot, but goalies can be vulnerable when they are moving side-to-side, or if their view of the puck is blocked by other players.

A "blocker" is a goalie's glove for his stick hand. "Literally, you're just blocking pucks away and deflecting them into the corner," Oordt says. "As you can see, mine has a lot of puck marks because I make a lot of save with it," he adds while cracking a mischievous smile.

The Billings Bulls will be back on home ice Friday January 31 and Saturday, February 1.
