Decision 2014: Montana House and Senate Candidates

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS -

With Denny Rehberg announcing he is seriously considering a run for the Montana U.S. Senate seat, the tides may turn on the political landscape in the upcoming midterm election.

The list of candidates, particularly for congress on the Republican ticket, is quite extensive and growing. Also, the race for the U.S. Senate seat is becoming hotly contested.

"So far we've got an emerging and kind of crowded Republican field," said William Selph, Chairman of the Yellowstone Young Republicans.

Of course, we're talking about none other than the Republican candidates for the soon to be vacant U.S. House seat.

As of now, there are five, with a possible six candidates come midterm primaries.

"We've got a former minority leader for the Montana senate in Corey Stapleton, was one of the first guys to announce. You've got Brad Johnson who is a former secretary of state, who may be a candidate, although he is now looking at the Public Service Commission in northwestern Montana," said Selph.

Another in the mix, Matt Rosendale, a senator from Glendive, Ryan Zinke from Whitefish, a former state senator, and someone who could make possibly a big splash this year.

"Elsie Arntzen is a female member of the Montana legislator and would be the only female candidate running in a statewide race at this point."

Sitting in the balance is former congressman Denny Rehberg, who made statements on Thursday about how he is seriously considering a run for the house seat.

The senate race is a bit more lean. KULR-8 did attempt to contact the Montana Democratic Party but have yet to hear from them; but this is where the senate race is currently standing.

Republicans will be giving full support to Congressman Steve Daines, as Democrats still squabble over who may become their candidate.

"You've got an interesting fight in the Democratic party. You've got former state senator and Lieutenant Governor in John Bohlinger, who has finally picked a party. And now that he has picked the Democrat party, he's fully embarrassing his liberal policies. But at the same time, you've got Harry Reid and Barack Obama and Jim Messina trying to clear the field for John Walsh who is relatively unknown to the people of Montana," said Selph.

Also in the Democratic senate race is long time Montana rancher and attorney Dirk Adams; as well as Republican candidates Champ Edmunds and David Leaser.
