Babies Born on New Years

BILLINGS -

Eight babies were born at St. Vincent Healthcare, and three at Billings Clinic, as of early Wednesday afternoon.

Twenty year-old Megan Schendel had contractions for three days until she gave birth to her new baby boy.

"I'm excited. It's still kind of scary, because like we have to figure out what we're going to do still, and we're still so young you know. I wasn't planning on having a baby so early, but I'm happy I did," Schendel said.

But for St. Vincent Healthcare patient, Mari Cantrell, it was a different story.

She started having complications overnight, and had to deliver 10 weeks early just to save her baby's life.

"Well it's very special, because he's here, and just that he made it alive like that. Just a big deal for us," Cantrell said.

Her son, Bear, was born premature, weighing in at three pounds, six ounces, and he spent the first day of his life in the NICU.

"He was supposed to be born in the middle of March, but it's kind of neat to have a special birthday," Cantrell said.

Mari's mom, Bobbi Bybee, said having a family hasn't been easy for Mari.

"And it's more special than you'll ever know. Mari lost two boys and had her two girls, so we waited a long time for her to have a baby," Bybee said.

Bybee said life is such a gift, and there's nothing better than seeing the birth of your daughter's first son.

"So it's...there aren't enough words to describe how special...we just thank God that he's here safe and that she's safe," Bybee said.
