It looks like Custer County is getting a new jail soon. The Undersheriff for Custer County says the city hopes to break ground on the new facility in the spring.

In September, more than 2,000 voters approved a bond for the new jail.

The existing jail was shut down in October of 2012 because it was too small, too old, and the American Civil Liberties Union was concerned over its condition. The new, 28-bed facility will be built over the next couple of years.

Right now, more than 10 Custer County prisoners are housed about 200 miles away in Glasgow.
